Hwachong volleyball beat the last year's A div finalist, tampines jc, in straight sets 25 - 11, 25 - 10. Spurred on by the narrow defeat by Pjc last week, The volleyball team made amends by turning in a magnificent performance to outclass and outfight tjc to signal their intention of topping their group which consist of tjc, vjc and jjc for the second round. With this crucial win over one of the toughest opponents in our group, we are right on track to enter the semis.
For the first set, Kian keong started as the setter, Lennis and Galvin as our quickers, Samuel and melvin as our open, Zijie as our sub-setter and Wincoln our libero. Hwachong dominated from start to finish as the match started with great intensity and speed. Melvin kickstarted our win by smashing in a venomous spike to the right. This was followed by a series of jump serves which greatly unsettled the tjc defence with its speed and power. Within minutes, we found ourselves up at 3-0.
Meanwhile, our attack, spearheaded by the effervescent Galvin and Samuel, successfully rake in precious points with their blocking which thwarted the opposition's attacking attempts and their spiking. This run was however halted when we fouled. However, we pressed on with greater intensity. At 8-2, melvin produced a sprawling save following a tj spike which sent the crowd to raptures. As the tjc blockers had their hands with trying to shut out our open and quickers, this left Zijie with precious space which he exploited with relish. On numerous occasions, he made the tjc blockers regret their strategy as he proved to be a huge threat on the right with his point winning spikes. Meanwhile at the back of the court, wincoln was back at his best, together with melvin and samuel, they were immense at the back as they dealt with everything the tjc attack could throw at them.
With the score at 9-3, melvin successfully saved an opposition spike down right and immediately returned the favour with a backrow spike courtesy of a nice set by samuel. Smart play by Lennis and Samuel brought the score up to 16-7 as their lethal combination of dropshots and spikes left tjc reeling. Melvin then earned another point with his jumpserve which aced the tjc defence. With the score at 19-8, Kian Keong and Galvin conjured up a piece of magic as they successfully fooled the tj blockers. With noone in place to stop him , Galvin needed no further encouragement as he smashed the ball to the left bringing the score to 20-8. The game finally ended when Samuel's serve found its mark as it created confusion amongst the tjc backrow.
No changes were made for the second set. Hwachong served up a delectable feast of attacking play to seal their win. A double block by Samuel and Galvin won our first point. However, tjc immediately pegged back with a drop shot to bring the score level at 1-1. Hwachong then stormed back to the lead with a run that saw a Samuel touch out at 2-1, a Galvin spike down right and block at 3-1 and 5-1 seperately. Our quick balls were proving to be a great menace to the tjc blockers as they could not grasp the timing of our runs, at 7-3, Lennis slammed home a quick ball to snatch back our serving rights. At 10-5, the in form Kian keong once again fooled the entire line of tjc blockers by setting up a quick ball for galvin when all eyes were on melvin. The red hot galvin summed up the trouble of the tjc line of defence as he rose to a palm higher than his blockers to slot home a thunderous spike down left. With his guile and power, the Tjc simply had no idea how to contain galvin throughout the 2 sets. Determined not to be outdone, the attacking duo of Samuel and Melvin demonstrated why they were so feared in A division as they unleashed a barrage of spikes which the tjc backline were unable to deal with. Still reeling from the first set loss, tjc eventually relented and we wrapped up the game 25-10.
Our next game will be on tuesday which is tmr at ccab. A win will guarantee us a place in the semis. So come support if you are free!
